Expert: Long-Term Melatonin Use May Threaten Heart Health

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A prominent cardiologist from California has raised concerns regarding the overlooked dangers associated with extended melatonin use. Dr. Sanjay Bhojraj, boasting over two decades in heart patient care, indicated that individuals consuming melatonin nightly for over a year could face a staggering 90 percent increase in heart failure risk within five years.

Melatonin, a hormone produced naturally in the brain, regulates the sleep-wake cycle, signaling when it’s time to sleep. While numerous individuals resort to melatonin supplements for sleep issues, Dr. Bhojraj asserts that most don’t actually require the supplement; instead, they should focus on improving their sleep habits.

In a video shared on November 14 via Instagram, Dr. Bhojraj cited a study by the American Heart Association, which investigated over 130,000 adults. The findings revealed that those using melatonin for more than a year are at a significantly heightened risk of developing heart failure.

He further explained that although melatonin is natural, it doesn’t guarantee safety. Other hormones such as cortisol, estrogen, and insulin can be detrimental to health if unbalanced, and melatonin is no exception. Excessive and prolonged melatonin use can misalign the body’s internal clock.

Dr. Bhojraj also highlighted that nightly melatonin consumption may disrupt the circadian rhythm—essential for sleep and various bodily functions—by altering hormonal signals and hampering the body's ability to produce its own melatonin. He emphasized that most individuals are not deficient in melatonin; instead, their sleep issues often stem from habits, such as late-night screen time or inconsistent sleep schedules.

He advises prioritizing simple adjustments for better sleep, like maintaining consistent bedtimes, dimming lights at night, and cutting down on late-night screen usage. These minor modifications can enhance sleep naturally without endangering heart health.

Dr. Bhojraj’s warning is clear: melatonin might appear benign, but its long-term use could jeopardize heart well-being and disrupt the body’s natural equilibrium.
