Aging Should Not Be Labeled as a Disease, Experts Caution

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Aging is an inherent part of human life. However, in recent years, a faction of scientists has proposed that it should be designated as a disease. Their rationale is that such a classification could lead to increased research funding and enhanced medical care. Nonetheless, numerous experts caution that this perspective may inadvertently exacerbate social harm.

The global discourse intensified in 2018 when the World Health Organization introduced a category termed “old age” in its International Classification of Diseases. This move sparked outrage, as many contended that aging should not equate to illness. Following significant criticism, the WHO replaced the term in 2021 with the more respectful “ageing-associated declines in intrinsic capacities.”

Some scientists advocate for treating aging as a disease due to the physiological changes it encompasses. With advancing age, individuals are at a greater risk for conditions like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and hypertension. They argue that focusing on aging as a disease could pave the way for revolutionary treatments that mitigate age-related health issues.

However, many experts assert that this viewpoint is overly simplistic. They argue that framing aging as a disease conveys a damaging message—implying that elderly individuals are frail or deficient, necessitating correction. Such narratives can increase stigma and lead older adults to feel undesired or unhealthy, despite leading normal, vibrant lives.

Additionally, specialists emphasize that aging encompasses more than mere physical decline; it represents a journey of emotional development, wisdom, and stability. Many older adults express a sense of increased happiness, confidence, and improved problem-solving abilities. Neglecting these positive aspects of aging in favor of disease-focused narratives does society a disservice.

Experts warn that labeling aging as a disease may reinforce ageist perceptions and instill fear about growing older, steering individuals toward unrealistic ideals of perpetual youth. Instead, they urge a societal shift toward respecting aging as a normal part of life, advocating for health systems that support older individuals without perceiving natural aging as a medical concern.
