Explosion Near Delhi's Red Fort Claims 9 Lives, Injures 20

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

New Delhi: A devastating explosion rocked the area near the Red Fort on Tuesday evening, resulting in the deaths of at least nine individuals and injuring around twenty more. The incident occurred close to a parked vehicle and took place around 6:40 PM, a peak time for visitors at this iconic landmark.

Delhi Police reported that the source of the blast was a white sedan parked near the main entrance of the fort. The explosion's impact was substantial, igniting nearby vehicles and shattering windows of local establishments. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, and the wounded were transported to LNJP and RML hospitals for urgent care.

Initial investigations indicate the involvement of an improvised explosive device (IED). Senior officials from the Delhi Police Special Cell and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have been tasked with the investigation. Authorities have reportedly recovered metal debris and electronic parts from the scene for forensic evaluation.

Given the gravity of the situation, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) has been activated to pursue potential terrorism connections. A significant security perimeter has been enacted around the Red Fort, with the monument closed for the next three days. Enhanced security measures are also underway at other vital locations throughout the city, including India Gate, Parliament House, and major metro stations.

During a visit to the site, Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora confirmed that the explosion was intentional, stating, “We are investigating all possibilities, including potential cross-border terrorism.”

Witnesses recounted scenes of confusion and fear following the explosion. A local vendor, Rakesh Sharma, recalled, “There was a tremendous noise, then flames and smoke billowed from the car. People began fleeing in every direction.”

No group has yet taken responsibility for the attack as the investigation is ongoing. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and refrain from sharing unverified information on social media.
