Fatima Sana Shaikh, renowned for her role in Dangal, has candidly shared a profound part of her life regarding her battle with bulimia. On Rhea Chakraborty’s podcast Chapter 2, aired on November 17, she revealed that her connection with food turned “toxic.” Despite projecting confidence, she was grappling with significant emotional and physical challenges hidden from view.
Her issues began shortly after completing Dangal. While preparing for the role, she adhered to a high-calorie diet of 2,500–3,000 calories daily, coupled with rigorous training. After filming ended, her unhealthy eating patterns persisted while her physical activity diminished, leading to a spiral of comfort eating that she couldn’t escape. Fatima expressed feelings of disappointment for feeling out of control regarding her body and habits.
Her experience oscillated between excessive binge eating and extreme restriction. Fatima recounted feeling apprehensive about going out, fearing a loss of control that could lead to another binge. This strict and confusing relationship with food consumed her thoughts, creating a sense of entrapment.
Sanya Malhotra, her co-star from Dangal, was the first to recognize Fatima's struggles and kindly addressed her concerning her eating behavior. This conversation helped Fatima confront her feelings of shame and acknowledge that her issues stemmed beyond just eating, touching on stress, pressure, and mental health.
Experts highlight that bulimia is a critical eating disorder requiring prompt attention. In a 2022 discussion with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Vrushali Bichkar from Motherhood Hospital, Pune, explained that bulimia encompasses recurrent overeating followed by purging, often linked to feelings of guilt and distress about food. Typical indicators include dental issues due to vomiting, physical marks from purging, and erratic weight changes. Many individuals with bulimia resort to secrecy regarding their eating habits due to embarrassment.
By bravely sharing her story, Fatima hopes to shed light on the silent battles facing many with eating disorders, encouraging openness and understanding. Though her path to healing continues, she is learning to nurture her body with kindness.
Fatima’s narrative also underlines the intense pressure actors face to conform to specific appearances. Maintaining an image often adds to anxiety, increasing the importance of self-care and mental well-being rather than adhering to unattainable standards.
This courageous sharing serves as a vital reminder of the need for empathy and awareness regarding eating disorders, often veiled and unacknowledged. Fatima’s openness fosters a more understanding community and promotes the notion that recovery, supported by compassion and understanding, is indeed possible.
