Formal Sector Wages in Malaysia Climb to RM3,167 by December 2025

Post by : Shakul

In December 2025, Malaysia’s formal sector reported an average monthly salary of RM3,167, showcasing significant wage growth. This increase is a positive sign of the nation's labor market and overall economic revival.

The latest quarterly report from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) revealed that this wage rise marks a four percent increase from the previous year.

Higher wages are being driven by an upswing in formal employment, with over seven million individuals now working in this sector, reflecting expanding job opportunities across various industries.

Throughout the last quarter of 2025, wages demonstrated consistent growth, with monthly income steadily increasing. This trend signals stable economic conditions and heightened demand for skilled labor.

Nevertheless, discrepancies in wages between male and female employees remain significant. Male workers dominate the workforce and earn marginally higher average salaries than their female counterparts.

Variations in wages are also observed among different demographics. Earnings differ based on industry, experience, and regional economic conditions, underscoring the workforce's diversity.

Age is another crucial factor influencing wages. Mid-career professionals report the highest earnings, while younger workers experience the most rapid wage growth, indicating improved prospects for newcomers in the job market.

Certain industries, like mining and quarrying, report the highest wages, whereas agriculture falls behind despite showing progress. This highlights the varying economic productivity and value across sectors.

Regional disparities are also noteworthy. Major urban hubs such as Kuala Lumpur, Pulau Pinang, and Selangor typically offer higher wages compared to other states, while some regions still experience lower average incomes, revealing uneven economic development.

Overall, the report from DOSM indicates a healthy trend in Malaysia’s employment and wage growth. Although challenges like income inequality persist, the steady rise in wages reflects a positive trajectory for the nation's economy.
