Customs officials at Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport seized gold worth more than Rs 4.26 crore after discovering a sophisticated smuggling attempt aboard an IndiGo flight arriving from Dubai. The operation was carried out on flight 6E-1478 following specific intelligence inputs received by authorities.
Acting on suspicion, customs officers conducted a detailed inspection of the aircraft with assistance from aviation engineers. During the search, officials focused on the front lavatory area of the aircraft, where they noticed irregularities inside a wall-mounted speaker box used for inflight announcements.
After dismantling the speaker unit, officers recovered two pouches wrapped in black plastic tape. The packets had been carefully concealed behind the audio components of the speaker, indicating a planned attempt to evade routine security and customs checks.
Further examination revealed that the pouches contained 24 foreign-origin gold biscuits of 999.0 purity. The total weight of the seized gold was 2,799.3 grams, equivalent to nearly 2.8 kilograms. Officials estimated the domestic market value of the recovered gold at approximately Rs 4.26 crore.
Investigators believe the gold was intended to be retrieved later by a domestic passenger or an accomplice connected to airport ground operations. However, heightened security checks appear to have disrupted the smuggling plan, and no individual came forward to claim the hidden consignment.
As a result, the recovered gold has been classified as unclaimed property and confiscated under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation to identify those responsible and determine whether the case is linked to a larger smuggling network operating between the Gulf region and India.
The seizure highlights the continued vigilance of customs authorities at Indian airports and reflects ongoing efforts to curb illegal gold trafficking through increasingly sophisticated concealment methods. Officials said further inquiries are underway and additional arrests or recoveries cannot be ruled out.
