Google has started integrating its AI app-building tool, Opal, directly into the Gemini web app. This allows users to create custom mini apps, known as Gems, without needing any coding skills. Gems are small AI-powered apps designed for specific purposes such as learning, brainstorming, coding, editing, and career guidance.
The Opal tool can be accessed through the Gems manager, where users describe what they want the app to do using natural-language prompts. Gemini models then automatically generate the app structure. A visual editor displays each step of the app, letting users rearrange or connect them as needed. This makes it easy for beginners to understand how their mini apps work.
Google has also added a new step-by-step view in the editor, turning prompts into a clear list of actions for better clarity and editing. For users who want more advanced options, Google provides the Advanced Editor at opal.google for deeper customization.
Opal and Gems reflect a growing trend called “vibe-coding,” where AI tools are used to create software through conversational prompts. The integration allows users to experiment with building or combining mini apps, which can then be reused for multiple tasks. Google confirmed that the Opal experiment is now live in the Gemini web app, giving users a hands-on experience with AI-powered app creation.
