A grizzly bear attack has left 11 individuals hurt, including both school children and teachers, during a nature excursion in Bella Coola, British Columbia, Canada. This unsettling event took place on Thursday afternoon along a frequently used trail approximately 700 kilometres northwest of Vancouver.
Local officials report that a group of fourth and fifth graders from Acwsalcta School were on the trail when they were unexpectedly charged by a grizzly bear. The situation led to widespread panic, as teachers and other nearby adults hurried to safeguard the students.
Emergency response teams confirmed that two individuals were critically wounded, and two additional people sustained serious injuries. The others were treated at the site. Notably, a teacher attempted to protect the children during the incident and had to be airlifted for urgent care due to severe injuries.
Following the attack, the Nuxalk Nation issued an alert advising community members to keep indoors as the bear remained on the loose. Police along with conservation officers equipped with safety gear commenced a search of the area to avert additional threats.
Parents expressed deep concern about their children's frightening experience. One mother recounted how her 10-year-old son was so close to the bear that he could “feel its fur” as it hurried by. She noted that while teachers tried to use bear spray to deter the animal, some students were unintentionally affected by the spray during the altercation.
In response to the anxiety stemming from the incident, the school announced it would be closed on Friday, and counseling services would be made available for students and staff members. The community is voicing both anxiety and relief that the situation wasn't more severe, marking this event as one of the most harrowing their school has ever encountered.
Authorities are diligently monitoring the area and advising locals to exercise caution as the search for the bear continues.
