Gulf Nations Advocate for Defence Cooperation and Media Integrity Post-Iran Ceasefire

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In an online session titled “The Gulf in the Aftermath of the Iran Ceasefire”, the Dubai Press Club (DPC) engaged prominent voices to explore pivotal regional issues.

Featured speakers included Kuwaiti media figure Mohammed Al-Mulla and Bahraini writer Sawsan Al-Sha’er, with moderation by Mohammed Al-Ahmed from Abu Dhabi Media Network.

The discussion centered on the shifting landscape in the Gulf as global scrutiny grows following the Iran ceasefire. The contributors highlighted the vital function of media in tackling the challenges confronting Gulf nations.

Al-Mulla stressed the necessity of a collaborative Gulf defence structure, asserting that such a joint force is critical in protecting the future safety of the region. He underscored the pivotal role of media in fostering awareness, promoting loyalty, and aiding youth development amid these dynamics.

Sawsan Al-Sha’er echoed the call for unified defence strategies, pointing out the efficacy of Gulf states in responding to Iranian-related threats while advocating for an enhanced collective approach.

She cautioned that the policy of containing Iran has shown limitations, especially with emerging proxy threats within several Gulf nations. Rigorous legal enforcement and superior coordination remain essential in addressing these risks.

In discussing media's role in regional stability, Al-Mulla referred to it as a form of “geopolitical defence”, crucial for countering misinformation and extremist narratives. He called for enhancing youth education to build a foundation of factual awareness.

The session concluded with a consensus on the urgent need to cultivate a robust pan-Gulf media landscape, complete with ethical guidelines to ensure accountable journalism and combat misinformation.
