Punjab kabaddi player Gurwinder Singh shot dead; Bishnoi gang claims responsibility

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Gurwinder Singh, a kabaddi player from Punjab, was shot dead in the Samrala block, police confirmed — the second prominent killing of a player in the state within a week. A statement linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang said members Karan Madpur and Tej Chak carried out the attack. A social media post attributed to an account connected with Anmol Bishnoi, brother of Lawrence Bishnoi, also warned rivals: “This is a warning for whoever sides with our enemies. Either mend your ways or be ready for the next bullet to pierce your chest.”

Authorities noted this is the 10th recorded murder of a kabaddi player in Punjab since 2016, underscoring how criminal elements have penetrated the sport. Once a rural cultural pastime, kabaddi has grown into a lucrative industry that attracts sizeable investment, including funds from the Punjabi diaspora in countries such as Canada, the UK and Australia, some of which officials say have been difficult to trace.

Observers and investigators say several athletes have formed ties with local gang figures and political patrons to secure funding or protection. Such relationships, they warn, have at times escalated into violent disputes and targeted attacks. Reports also indicate that proceeds from the drug trade have been channelled into certain tournaments, further entangling organised crime with the sport.

This incident follows the killing earlier this week of national-level kabaddi player Tejpal Singh, 26, in Ludhiana, who was beaten and shot. While no gang has publicly accepted responsibility for Tejpal Singh’s death, police have arrested two suspects, identified as Gagandeep Singh and Harpreet Singh, alias Honey. Investigators said an old personal rivalry could be a motivating factor.

Law enforcement officials expressed concern over the rising number of attacks on kabaddi players and have called for heightened vigilance. The recent fatalities have renewed calls for stronger protective measures for athletes as Punjab contends with the influence of gang rivalries and organised crime within the sport.
