Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, the president of PAS, has unequivocally dismissed rumors that the separation from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) is simply a strategic maneuver for the elections. He clarified that the collaboration between the parties has officially ceased, despite contesting under the Perikatan Nasional (PN) emblem in the Johor state elections.
In comments made after a religious talk at Rusila Mosque in Marang, Hadi emphasized that this split is a reflection of a genuine political choice and not a fleeting election tactic.
Reasons for Separate Campaigns by PAS and Bersatu
Hadi explained that the reason for their independent campaigns stems from Bersatu's decision to keep using the Perikatan Nasional logo. Though both parties share the coalition's symbol, they are managing their own distinct campaigns during the Johor elections.
He noted that PAS members will remain focused on their individual campaign strategies, irrespective of Bersatu's political decisions.
Independent Campaigns but Unified Coalition Symbol
The noticeable political divide has particularly surfaced during the Johor elections, as PAS and Bersatu have revealed their candidates at separate functions instead of uniting for a coalition announcement as customary in past elections.
While candidates from both parties have received their official nominations from Perikatan Nasional, they are presently organizing their campaigns, electoral operations, and team strategies autonomously.
Perikatan Nasional’s Membership Status Remains Intact
Hadi confirmed that Bersatu is still considered a member of Perikatan Nasional, as the coalition has not officially expelled the party from its ranks. Nevertheless, the previously existing alliance between PAS and Bersatu has concluded.
PN chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar has also verified that each party within the coalition will independently choose candidates and oversee election-related activities in their respective constituencies.
Johor Election Campaign Gears Up
The Malaysian Election Commission has designated June 27 as nomination day, July 7 for early voting, and July 11 for polling day. Analysts anticipate that the distinct campaign strategies of PAS and Bersatu will prompt significant discussions throughout the Johor electoral period.
The results are expected to have implications for future collaborations among opposition groups ahead of national elections.
Political Dynamics are Shifting
These recent developments underscore the evolving situation within Malaysia's opposition landscape. While both parties still utilize the same electoral symbol, their decision to run separate campaigns suggests profound political divergences that may impact collaboration beyond the Johor elections.
Observers believe that voters are likely to scrutinize how this independent campaign tactic will influence the overall electoral success of Perikatan Nasional.
