Maryland Doctor Issues Warning on Long-Term Effects of High Heels

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

High heels are frequently viewed as a chic accessory for various occasions, but a Maryland physician cautions that these trendy shoes can alter the body in significant, often unnoticed ways. Dr. Kunal Sood, an anaesthesiologist and expert in interventional pain medicine, recently emphasized the long-term risks associated with high heel wear, including potential damage to tendons and joints, alongside an increased risk of knee arthritis.

According to Dr. Sood, prolonged wear of high heels disrupts the body's natural alignment. Keeping the foot in a pointed position for extended periods can cause the Achilles tendon and calf muscles to shorten, leading to tightness and reduced flexibility. Consequently, ankle motion diminishes, making flat shoes feel uncomfortable, while also increasing the likelihood of tendon strains or injuries.

One major concern highlighted by Dr. Sood relates to knee joints. He states that high heels shift the body's weight forward, applying excess pressure on the inner knee, which can accelerate cartilage wear over time. This mechanism raises the risk of knee osteoarthritis, which manifests as pain, stiffness, and mobility issues.

Moreover, high heels can alter a person's walking style. Shortened strides, restricted ankle movement, and altered muscle engagement tend to become habitual. Dr. Sood notes that such adaptations might persist even after individuals cease wearing heels, resulting in long-term changes to movement patterns.

In summary, Dr. Sood asserts that regular use of tight, high heels not only affects the feet but also reshapes tendons, joints, and walking behaviors in ways that might have lasting implications. While high heels may provide an elegant appearance, reliance on them can induce enduring physical stress.

To mitigate these risks, medical professionals suggest opting for supportive and comfortable footwear and minimizing high heel usage. Incorporating calf muscle stretches and allowing the feet to recover can also alleviate strain.
