Risks Associated with Consuming Raw Milk Highlighted by Doctor

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A physician from Manipal Hospital has issued a warning regarding the consumption of raw milk, emphasizing its potential dangers. Despite popular beliefs circulating online that raw milk offers increased health benefits, experts have clarified that this notion is misleading. Raw milk, which has not undergone heating to eliminate harmful pathogens, can harbor dangerous bacteria that may lead to severe illness.

Dr. Sambit Bhuyan, a gastroenterologist at Manipal Hospital in Bhubaneswar, stated that consuming raw milk poses risks for all individuals. He explained the necessity of pasteurizing milk from cows, goats, and sheep to ensure its safety. Pasteurization involves heating the milk to eliminate harmful microorganisms; raw milk bypasses this crucial step, raising health concerns.

Dr. Bhuyan highlighted that raw milk can carry perilous bacteria such as Salmonella, E. coli, Listeria, Campylobacter, and even tuberculosis bacteria. These pathogens can lead to severe foodborne illnesses, resulting in symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and muscle aches. Some infections stemming from raw milk can even be life-threatening.

Additionally, the doctor pointed out that raw milk is particularly hazardous for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems, including individuals with diabetes, cancer, or those who have received organ transplants. For these groups, the bacteria present in raw milk can pose severe health risks.

Dr. Bhuyan elaborated on the risks for pregnant women, explaining that consumption of raw milk could lead to miscarriage, premature birth, or underweight newborns. This is attributed to Listeria, a bacterium that poses significant danger during pregnancy.

Many individuals believe that raw milk is richer in nutrients; however, Dr. Bhuyan asserts that the health hazards significantly outweigh any potential benefits. Milk is only deemed safe and beneficial once it has been properly pasteurized.

In conclusion, the doctor stresses a critical message: the risks associated with raw milk consumption are not justified. Opting for pasteurized milk is the safest way to enjoy the nutritional benefits of milk without jeopardizing one’s health.
