The air quality in Delhi-NCR continues to deteriorate, with pollution indices significantly exceeding safe thresholds. As smog thickens, residents face an increase in respiratory issues, eye discomfort, coughs, and fatigue. This pollution surge impacts everyone, including the elderly, young adults, and children. Many are relying on air purifiers and masks, but healthcare professionals emphasize that those measures alone are insufficient. Adopting additional daily practices is crucial for lung protection and minimizing the adverse effects of polluted air.
In a recent discussion with HT Lifestyle, consultant physician Dr. Leelamohan PVR from Padithem Health Care and Practo in Bengaluru shared three straightforward health strategies anyone can implement at home. He noted that air pollution has emerged as a significant health threat, with an alarming rise in respiratory diseases. While masks and purifiers provide some relief, Dr. Leelamohan stressed the importance of adjusting daily routines, particularly during peak pollution periods.
His first recommendation is to limit outdoor activities. Pollution levels peak in the early mornings and late evenings, primarily due to air temperature fluctuations. During these times, smog settles closer to the ground, posing greater risks. He advised against outdoor walks or workouts during these hours. It's advisable to keep windows shut and monitor real-time AQI updates before going outside. Those who exercise should consider moving their workouts indoors or opting for midday sessions when pollution levels tend to lower.
Dr. Leelamohan's second piece of advice is to promote lung health naturally. Staying well-hydrated is one of the simplest yet most impactful practices, as water aids the body in flushing out toxins. He also recommended deep-breathing exercises like pranayama or diaphragmatic breathing to enhance lung capacity and clear airways. Using a saline nasal rinse can alleviate irritation caused by dust and pollutants, contributing to easier breathing.
Lastly, the third suggestion focuses on bolstering the body with nutritious foods. Dr. Leelamohan highlighted that pollution elevates oxidative stress, leading to harmful free radicals damaging cells. Including antioxidant-rich foods in one's diet can help shield the lungs from this harm. He suggested incorporating citrus fruits, amla, turmeric, leafy greens, walnuts, and omega-3-rich foods into daily meals. These options help reduce inflammation, enhance immunity, and promote better lung health during periods of high smog.
Dr. Leelamohan concluded that small, consistent actions such as drinking ample water, maintaining clean indoor air, consuming antioxidant-rich foods, and practicing mindful breathing can yield significant health benefits. While these habits won’t eliminate pollution, they can fortify the body in its presence.
Additionally, he emphasized that these recommendations are intended for general awareness and should not replace professional medical advice. Individuals suffering from chronic respiratory conditions or persistent symptoms should seek medical consultation.
