Essential Heart Tests to Lower Heart Attack Risk Explained by Surgeon

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, often developing stealthily. Many individuals may not experience obvious symptoms until the condition escalates. Consequently, healthcare professionals stress the significance of early testing and regular check-ups, particularly for those over 40.

According to heart surgeon Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty, before initiating any intensive medications or treatments, it's crucial to assess the heart's actual condition. Several simple, non-invasive tests can reveal whether the heart is functioning effectively or if an artery is becoming obstructed. Early detection is vital to avert severe complications down the line.

Here are three fundamental tests that are commonly recommended to evaluate heart health:

1. Electrocardiogram (ECG)
An ECG is a fundamental test that tracks the heart's electrical activity. Small electrodes are placed on the chest, arms, and legs, enabling the machine to document the heart's rhythm.
This examination assists physicians in identifying irregular heartbeats or indications of past heart issues. It's a quick, uncomplicated test that requires no specific preparation.

2. Echocardiogram (ECHO)
An ECHO is an ultrasound examination of the heart utilizing sound waves to generate real-time images. This evaluation reveals how effectively the heart pumps blood and whether the heart valves are functioning properly.
Doctors can also ascertain if the heart muscle is weakened or thickened. This test provides a comprehensive understanding of the heart’s shape, size, and overall function.

3. Cardiac CT Angiogram and Calcium Score
These imaging tests allow physicians to visualize the arteries of the heart. They indicate whether cholesterol or calcium deposits are beginning to accumulate in the cardiovascular system.
A CT Angiogram can identify narrowing of the arteries, a precursor to heart attacks, while a calcium score quantifies the existing plaque levels in the blood vessels.

Medical professionals recommend that a combination of regular testing, a balanced diet, physical activity, and refraining from smoking can significantly lower the risk of heart disease. Post-40, even in the absence of symptoms, undergoing these tests is advisable for maintaining optimal heart health.
