Liver Expert Lists Foods to Embrace and Avoid for Optimal Liver Health

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Renowned liver specialist Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, often referred to as “The Liver Doc,” has a crucial message for individuals keen on maintaining liver health and reducing the chances of fatty liver disease. He highlights that making informed dietary choices and steering clear of specific beverages plays a vital role in preventing liver conditions growing increasingly prevalent worldwide.

The World Health Organization (WHO) indicates a worrying surge in liver-related illnesses, primarily driven by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcohol-related liver disease. Fatty liver is emerging as a leading health concern globally, characterized by excessive fat accumulation in the liver, potentially leading to serious medical issues later on.

Sharing insights via Instagram, Dr. Philips outlined key dietary restrictions and inclusions. He noted four specific items that Indians should limit: sugar-sweetened drinks, coconut oil, palm oil-based products, and dairy fats like butter and ghee. These foods are high in fat and sugar, which may progressively harm liver function.

Dr. Philips stressed the need to completely eliminate one major culprit from the diet: alcohol. Abstaining from alcohol can significantly enhance liver health and reduce chances of damage.

As a beneficial addition to the diet, Dr. Philips strongly recommended unsweetened black coffee. He pointed out that it contains natural compounds that offer liver protection and diminish fatty liver risk, thereby suggesting it should be consumed without sugar or cream to be effective.

He emphasized, “There are four items to seriously limit: sugar-sweetened beverages, coconut oil, palm oil products, and dairy. The single item to avoid completely is alcohol, while incorporating unsweetened black coffee is essential.”

Experts note that fatty liver disease develops when excess fat accumulates in the liver, surpassing 5% of its normal composition. An ultrasound can easily diagnose this condition. Initially asymptomatic, fatty liver may evolve into discomfort and severe liver damage over time.

There are two primary forms of fatty liver: Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD), resulting from excessive drinking, and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), a consequence of obesity, diabetes, or poor dietary choices, recently reclassified as Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatosis Liver Disease (MASLD).

Many individuals remain unaware of their fatty liver status until it escalates, often experiencing mild discomfort or heaviness in the abdomen post-meals.

Experts advocate for reducing fried items, sugary drinks, and processed snacks. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, coupled with regular physical activity, sufficient rest, and proper hydration, is critical in supporting liver health.

Dr. Philips’ message underlines that liver health hinges not only on medications but significantly on dietary choices. Gradual lifestyle adjustments such as abstaining from alcohol and fried foods and consuming plain black coffee can help sustain liver vitality.

The key takeaway is awareness. Individuals must comprehend how dietary habits influence their organs and proactively take measures to safeguard their health. With the right dietary choices, fatty liver disease can be averted before it becomes a serious concern.
