Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, graced the opening ceremony of the House of Arts at Expo City Dubai. This landmark event signifies a pivotal move in the cultural evolution of Expo City, positioning the House of Arts as a dynamic venue dedicated to showcasing art from both the UAE and neighboring regions, ensuring it is open to all.
The inauguration attracted dignitaries, artists, and cultural influencers. The House of Arts is housed in the renowned building previously known as the Morocco Pavilion, now revitalized for this new initiative. Spanning seven stories, it features extensive exhibition areas, workshops, and programming spaces. Recently nominated for the esteemed Aga Khan Award, the building highlights its architectural and cultural relevance.
During her visit, H.H. Sheikha Latifa toured the inaugural exhibition, titled ‘Interwoven,’ showcasing works by 18 artists from the UAE, GCC, and the broader Arab community. She applauded the creativity and depth of the artistic expressions, noting that such works contribute significantly to the local cultural scene, showcasing the artists’ ambitions and talents.
Sheikha Latifa stated, “The exhibition showcases the unique creative expressions of participating artists. Its strength lies in the variety of viewpoints represented, fostering dialogue and connection among local, Gulf, and Arab talent. These exchanges bolster the artistic landscape and help cultivate a sustainable art ecosystem that nurtures innovation and supports the development of the cultural and creative sectors.”
She emphasized the strategic collaboration between Dubai Culture and Expo City, referring to it as a benchmark for cultural synergy among institutions. This partnership reflects a mutual dedication to elevating cultural diversity and empowering the creative economy in Dubai.
Visitors to the House of Arts had the chance to engage with traditional crafts, including Sadu weaving, reimagined in innovative formats. The exhibition seamlessly merges heritage with modern creativity, illustrating how traditional crafts can adapt and resonate with contemporary artistic voices. Artworks inspired by pearl diving, weaving, and local customs were creatively exhibited through metalwork, digital installations, suspended textiles, and sand-based art.
Contributing artists provided distinctive interpretations of Sadu weaving, a technique recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. Their creations highlighted intergenerational ties, merging traditional techniques with modern art to narrate stories of shared heritage and cultural identity.
The House of Arts is integral to the ongoing collaboration between Dubai Culture and Expo City, reinforcing Dubai’s status as a premier hub for creativity and innovation. This partnership also featured Dhai Dubai, culminating with the House of Arts launch, celebrating Emirati artists across three generations.
Amna Abulhoul, Executive Creative Director of Entertainment and Experiences at Expo City Dubai, remarked, “As the second edition of Dhai Dubai concludes, we ignite a new chapter at House of Arts, a sanctuary for artists and creatives to collaborate, innovate, and thrive. Our inaugural exhibition reflects shared cultural stories and personal narratives, merging ancient traditions with contemporary art to inspire future generations at Expo City Dubai.”
House of Arts is now an essential destination for art enthusiasts, culture lovers, and creative professionals. It bolsters the region’s artistic environment while offering avenues for collaboration and learning, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the UAE and the Arab world in a contemporary, accessible manner.
