Ian Cleary Sentenced to Four Years for 2013 Gettysburg College Assault

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

PENNSYLVANIA – More than ten years following the shocking 2013 assault on a Gettysburg College campus, Ian Cleary has been sentenced to a prison term of two to four years for the sexual assault of a fellow student. The sentence was handed down on Monday after Cleary admitted guilt in a Facebook message that read, “So I raped you.” This long-awaited justice comes after the relentless advocacy of victim Shannon Keeler, who sought accountability amid years of inaction from authorities.

The case captured national attention when Cleary's concerning message to Keeler resurfaced in 2019, reopening emotional wounds for the survivor. It catalyzed a broader conversation about the justice system's inadequacies in protecting survivors of sexual violence on campus. Cleary, 32, was extradited from France in 2024 and pled guilty to second-degree sexual assault earlier this year, reigniting the focus on the scandal.

During the sentencing, Senior Judge Kevin Hess labeled the assault a “horrifying” violation, particularly alarming for families with daughters attending college. The judge took note of Cleary's guilty plea and expressed remorse, although the prison term handed down was shorter than what state guidelines typically suggest. After fleeing the U.S., Cleary had built a new life in California working for Tesla and earned his master’s degree before moving abroad.

In a poignant court appearance, Cleary directly addressed Keeler and his father, acknowledging his struggles with mental health. “I am committed to seeking treatment for my issues as I move on,” he stated. The case had faced significant delays due to concerns about evidence and procedural barriers, prolonging the legal battle.

Keeler has emerged as a powerful advocate for survivors of sexual assault, delivering a moving victim impact statement in court. She shared her dismay at how the system designed to protect her instead sheltered her assailant. “The system meant to help me, protected you instead,” she emotionally expressed, reflecting on her years-long fight for justice. While the sentencing provided some closure, she lamented that critical evidence, including her rape kit, had been lost over time.

The conclusion of this chapter regarding Cleary's culpability highlights the significant challenges survivors encounter in their quest for justice. Despite facing a potential maximum of ten years, Cleary's sentence was reduced due to his guilty plea and acknowledged mental health issues. However, prosecutors lamented that years of delay robbed Keeler of a timely resolution.

Authorities from both the U.S. and Europe struggled to locate Cleary after his indictment in 2021, finally apprehending him in Metz, France, in 2024 for unrelated charges. Adams County District Attorney Brian Sinnett noted that although it could not be proved that Cleary intentionally evaded arrest, “the circumstances raise legitimate questions.”

Keeler has previously shared her experience with the Associated Press, highlighting the systemic reluctance from prosecutors in handling campus sexual assault cases. She expressed hope that her story can drive change: “The system that failed me a decade ago has finally delivered some accountability, but not without sacrifices,” she reflected, acknowledging her ongoing emotional journey following the Gettysburg College incident.

As Cleary begins his sentence, the case remains a potent reminder of the arduous path survivors face in pursuit of justice, underscoring the pressing need for reforms to ensure that no victim remains unheard again.
