Sharjah has once again showcased its role as a cultural beacon in the Arab world as His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi inaugurated the 22nd Sharjah Festival of Arabic Poetry on Monday night at the Cultural Palace.
This seven-day gathering has attracted more than 80 poets, critics, and media professionals from the Arab nations, alongside participants from various African countries. The opening ceremony underscored Sharjah’s enduring dedication to fostering the Arabic language, poetry, and literary traditions.
During the event, attendees viewed a recorded segment titled “Years of Poetry,” celebrating a decade of established poetry houses across the Arab region under the patronage of the Ruler of Sharjah. These venues have grown into vital cultural hubs that promote poetic talent, enhance literary discussions, and build bridges between poets and critics.
The ceremony also honored exceptional contributions to literature. Dr Ahmed Balboula was awarded the Sharjah Prize for Arabic Poetry, while Mahrez Ben Mohsen Rachdi from Tunisia, Al Mahdi Al Araj from Morocco, and Al Hassan Mohamed Mahmoud from Mauritania took home the Sharjah Prize for Poetry Criticism, in first, second, and third places, respectively.
Poetry readings were a highlight of the evening, featuring performances by Emirati poet Najat Al Dhaheri, Egyptian poet Dr Ahmed Balboula, and Iraqi poet Hazbar Mahmoud, who provided audiences with a rich array of poetic expressions.
Throughout the week, the festival will host poetry readings, cultural evenings, and interactive discussions aimed at fostering dialogue among participants. A specialized book-signing section will allow readers to personally engage with the poets, while the contributions of 12 Golden Rhyme Award winners will be spotlighted in the magazine's 2025 editions.
The event attracted numerous dignitaries, including Sheikh Dr Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Ruler’s Office, cultural leaders, poets, critics, and enthusiasts, all united in their celebration of the timeless essence of Arabic poetry.
