India and Canada on Verge of $2.8 Billion Uranium Agreement to Enhance Nuclear Energy

India is nearing the completion of a significant $2.8 billion uranium supply deal with Canada, aimed at fueling its nuclear power facilities. This development comes shortly after the initiation of discussions on a broad economic partnership between the two nations.

This announcement was made following a discussion between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G20 Leaders' Summit in Johannesburg. Both leaders reiterated their commitment to enhancing civil nuclear collaborations, particularly through long-term uranium supply contracts.

Cameco Inc., a Canadian firm based in Saskatchewan, will be responsible for supplying the uranium. Cameco has a longstanding history of providing uranium to India, with the previous supply contract with India's Department of Atomic Energy having lapsed in 2020. This earlier agreement was established during Modi's 2015 visit to Canada, where he met then-Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

The sale of Canadian uranium to India for energy generation is permitted under the Canada-India Nuclear Cooperation Agreement, which has been effective since 2013.

The new uranium contract could span as long as ten years and may be integrated into a wider nuclear cooperation arrangement between the two countries. India has also expressed an interest in developing small modular reactors, offering flexible options for future energy partnerships.

Furthermore, the uranium supply contract aligns with the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership. This trilateral framework, launched at the same G20 summit, aims to enhance collaboration among these democratic nations in cutting-edge technologies, supportive of clean energy and artificial intelligence initiatives.

This increasing cooperation between India and Canada reflects a robust partnership in nuclear energy and technology, which is essential for addressing India's expanding energy requirements and clean energy initiatives. The agreement is anticipated to secure a consistent uranium supply, vital for the ongoing operation and growth of India's nuclear power plants.
