India has decided to close two additional visa application centres in Bangladesh amidst rising security apprehensions. This action follows reports of protests and anti-India sentiments emerging across various regions.
Incident Overview
Visa centres located in Rajshahi and Khulna have been shut down, with the Dhaka centre also previously closed. An official statement indicated that these closures are due to the prevailing security landscape.
Timeline of Events
The closures took effect on December 18, 2025, following a protest march close to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka the day before.
Details of the Protest
Protesters gathered near the Indian High Commission under the banner of “July Oikya.” During this demonstration, various speakers made vociferous demands and articulated criticisms against India. In response, India assessed the evolving situation and opted for the closure of visa centres to safeguard personnel.
Individuals with scheduled appointments were informed that new dates would be communicated to them in due course.
Government Responses
India has expressed alarm regarding the increasing instances of open anti-India rhetoric, particularly focusing on the northeastern provinces, referred to as the “seven sisters.”
On the other hand, Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Touhid Hossain dismissed these worries, asserting that the student leader involved is not affiliated with the government, and that law and order remain intact.
Political Context
The provocative statements originated from a member of the National Citizens Party, a group that arose from student protests last year that ultimately led to the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
The party currently backs the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, and some extremists linked to this faction have issued threats against Indian officials within Bangladesh.
Election-Related Issues
India has urged Bangladesh to conduct elections that are peaceful and fair. However, the interim administration has indicated it will not entertain external pressures regarding its electoral process.
Political experts in Bangladesh caution that fringe groups might attempt to disrupt the electoral process by inciting unrest and attributing blame to India.
Although some factions have made alarming proclamations, India has maintained a composed stance. Still, in light of the ongoing safety issues, India closes visa centres in Bangladesh as a precautionary measure. The situation is being monitored closely as political tensions unfold.
