India Excluded from US Green Card Lottery Until 2028

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Indian citizens have officially been removed from the US Green Card lottery roster until at least 2028, altering the landscape for those hoping to gain permanent residency in the United States. The Diversity Visa (DV) lottery, known for promoting an inclusive immigrant body, draws participants from nations with historically low immigration numbers. Due to India's significant immigration figures in recent years, the country has surpassed the eligibility cap, disqualifying its citizens from the US Green Card lottery.

Statistics reveal India's considerable migration flow to the US. In 2021, over 93,000 Indians relocated to the US, a figure that grew to 127,010 in 2022, far surpassing total migrants from any other region, including South America, Africa, and Europe. Following this trend, 2023 saw over 78,000 more Indian immigrants. As a result, Indian nationals will be barred from the US Green Card lottery through 2028, alongside other nations such as China, South Korea, Canada, and Pakistan, which similarly reflect the program's aim of diversifying US immigration.

With the closure of the US Green Card lottery, Indian nationals face a narrowing range of options for obtaining permanent residency in the United States. They can consider transitioning from an H-1B work visa to a green card, exploring investment opportunities, family-sponsored applications, or asylum options. However, these pathways have become more stringent with evolving US immigration regulations, leaving both applicants and employers apprehensive about future prospects. The elimination of the US Green Card lottery adds another significant hurdle for Indian nationals aiming for long-term immigration.

Moreover, the continued crackdown on immigration under the previous administration has intensified hardships for Indians and other foreign nationals. Increased scrutiny of student visa applications, mandatory social media checks, and extensive vetting processes present fresh challenges for hopeful immigrants. Applicants are subjected to thorough evaluations to ascertain any potential threat to US interests or political activism. Consequently, the prospects for obtaining permanent residency outside the US Green Card lottery have become increasingly daunting.

Experts emphasize that this exclusion of Indians from the Green Card lottery signals an urgent necessity for alternative immigration strategies. Companies that depend on skilled Indian professionals must reposition their focus towards H-1B visa adjustments or investment avenues, while families seeking sponsorship cope with protracted waiting periods. The historical significance of the US Green Card lottery as a simple avenue for many Indians has diminished, underscoring a rapidly changing immigration landscape and the constricted possibilities for securing permanent residency.
