The head coach of the India U-17 men's football team, Bibiano Fernandes, has revealed a 23-member squad for the upcoming AFC U-17 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, set to commence on May 5 in Jeddah. India is eager to secure a spot in the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2026 as they step onto this continental stage.
Known as the Blue Colts, the Indian squad has been intensifying preparations through numerous training camps and international friendly encounters. Prior to their departure for Saudi Arabia, the players were based in Doha, Qatar, where they competed in two closed-door matches against the Qatar U-17 team, concluding with a 1-1 draw and a subsequent goalless tie. The coaching team is optimistic that these encounters have enhanced player fitness and tactical readiness before the championship begins.
India has been drawn into Group D, where they will compete against formidable opponents including the Australian and Uzbek national U-17 teams. While North Korea was initially part of this group, they have opted out, leaving India to face Australia first on May 6, followed by Uzbekistan on May 10.
The stakes are particularly high as the top two teams from the group will advance directly to the quarter-finals, with success in this round also ensuring a spot in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2026. This scenario has heightened anticipation around the Indian squad, with hopes pinned on achieving World Cup qualification through merit for the first time.
Coach Bibiano Fernandes, one of India’s most seasoned youth football mentors, has played a pivotal role in shaping many players who have gone on to represent the nation at higher levels. His experience and emphasis on discipline are expected to be crucial factors in India’s journey at the Asian tournament.
The team features a diverse lineup, showcasing the expanding landscape of youth football across India. The goalkeeping trio comprises Alok Nishad, Manashjyoti Baruah, and Rajrup Sarkar, while the defensive line includes Abhishek Kumar Mondal, Indra Rana Magar, Korou Meitei Konthoujam, Lawmsangzuala, Lesvin Rebelo, Md Aimaan Bin, and Shubham Poonia.
In the midfield, players like Dallalmuon Gangte, Denny Singh Wangkhem, Diamond Singh Thokchom, Moosa Ashiq Sofi, and Nitishkumar Meitei Yengkhom have been selected. The attack will feature Adil Aman A, Azlaan Shah Kh, Gunleiba Wangkheirakpam, Heeranganba Seram, Rahan Ahmed, Raj Singh Wahengbam, Washington Singh Ngangom, and Yuvraj Kadam.
With recent progress in youth football, fans are hopeful that the U-17 team will sustain this momentum on the Asian platform, even as they prepare to face tough challenges from Australia and Uzbekistan. Confidence remains high within the Indian camp as they strive to make a significant impact in the tournament.
