At the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Indian women's cricket made history by winning their very first Women’s World Cup title. Led by the inspiring Harmanpreet Kaur, the team triumphed over South Africa, securing a 52-run victory that ignited celebrations among fans and players alike.
As Harmanpreet claimed the final wicket—Nadine de Klerk, bowled by Deepti Sharma—the crowd erupted in ecstatic cheers. This win represents a significant milestone for Indian women's cricket, placing them among the elite in the sport.
Honoring the Pioneers of the Game
The Indian team took a moment to recognize the legends who paved the way for their success. Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Anjum Chopra—key figures in the history of women’s cricket in India—were honored with the World Cup trophy during the event. All three were present in commentary roles, having faced disappointing near-wins in the 2005 and 2017 World Cups.
In an interview, Harmanpreet reflected on the gravity of this tribute and shared how the squad felt the weight of past disappointments, especially regarding the 2022 World Cup. “Smriti and I were filled with sadness for not achieving this for them,” she remarked.
She noted that the entire team was determined to secure a win with the legends in attendance to witness the historic occasion. Alongside Mithali, Jhulan, and Anjum, several former players and coaches provided unwavering support, including Diana Edulji, Shubhangi Kulkarni, and Sudha Shah, who guided Harmanpreet in her early career.
A Historic Win among Cricket Legends
Harmanpreet's leadership now places her in a select group of Indian cricketers, joining Kapil Dev (1983) and MS Dhoni (2011) as the sole leaders of Indian teams to secure ODI World Cup glory. Her poignant words captured the significance of the occasion: “Experiencing this moment with them was incredibly special. We could not imagine it without them.”
Outstanding Performance in the Final
The victory was a team effort, with notable individual contributions. Deepti Sharma's five-wicket haul was critical in dismantling the South African batting order. Shafali Verma shone with the bat, scoring an impressive 87 runs and taking two wickets, epitomizing the team’s all-around excellence.
A New Chapter for Women’s Cricket in India
This landmark victory symbolizes years of struggle, growth, and the ascent of women’s cricket in India. The emotional celebrations underscored the sacrifices made by many both on and off the field.
As the team hoisted the World Cup, they not only celebrated a victory but also inspired millions across the nation, heralding a promising future for Indian women’s cricket.
