Chandigarh: Sarabjit Kaur, a 52-year-old Indian Sikh woman from Kapurthala, Punjab, has reportedly embraced Islam and wedded a Pakistani man after vanishing during a religious pilgrimage, according to emerging documents.
Kaur journeyed to Pakistan on November 4 with a Sikh “jatha” of 1,992 pilgrims crossing the Wagah-Attari border for the 555th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev. While her group returned to India on November 13, she was notably absent.
An Urdu-written ‘nikahnama’ (Islamic marriage contract) reveals that she has tied the knot with Nasir Hussain, a local from Sheikhupura, about 56 km from Lahore. This documentation implies she adopted the name “Noor” after converting to Islam. Verification of these documents is still pending.
A mother of two sons from her previous marriage to Karnail Singh, who has lived in England for nearly 30 years, Kaur had a passport issued in Muktsar district, Punjab. There are no immigration records indicating her return to India.
Upon learning of Kaur's absence, the Indian Immigration Department notified the Punjab Police, which has submitted an initial report to the appropriate agencies. Indian authorities are working alongside their Pakistani counterparts to probe her disappearance.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the leading Sikh organization, annually organizes pilgrimages to significant gurudwaras in Pakistan, especially during Guru Nanak’s Prakash Parv. This year’s 10-day pilgrimage to Nankana Sahib occurred after previous security concerns were resolved.
The unusual developments surrounding Kaur’s disappearance and conversion have drawn considerable attention, raising alarm about the safety and treatment of Indian pilgrims in Pakistan for religious journeys.
As investigations progress, efforts are concentrated on authenticating the marriage documents and understanding the circumstances that led Kaur to remain in Pakistan.
