A member of Jakarta's regional legislative council has proposed that the Indonesian government prohibit entry to Israeli passport holders in light of a recent attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.
Lukmanul Hakim emphasized the need for decisive diplomatic measures following the deaths of three Indonesian soldiers who were serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The incident occurred on March 29 when artillery fire from Israel hit a UNIFIL base, resulting in the loss of life of three Indonesian peacekeepers and multiple injuries, drawing widespread outcry and demands for accountability.
Hakim argued that Indonesia should assert its sovereignty by restricting entry to individuals holding Israeli passports, signaling the nation's support for international law and solidarity with the fallen personnel.
Indonesia has historically avoided formal diplomatic ties with Israel and consistently advocated for Palestinian statehood within global forums. This latest incident has intensified public and political calls for a more robust response.
There are rising demands for President Prabowo Subianto to take significant action, while efforts to repatriate the bodies of the deceased soldiers are underway. The families are also set to receive posthumous honors and financial support.
The Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) is coordinating with UN officials to manage the situation's aftermath, including medical assistance for the injured peacekeepers still in Lebanon.
This attack has raised wider questions regarding the security of UN peacekeeping operations in areas of conflict, particularly amid ongoing tensions involving Israel and various armed groups in the region.
As diplomatic relations become strained, Indonesia is likely to consider its actions carefully, aiming to balance its international responsibilities with local sentiment and its established foreign policy approach.
