Air raid sirens briefly sounded around Dubai International Airport on Tuesday morning after the UAE’s air defence systems detected incoming missiles and drones reportedly launched from Iran. The alert forced passengers and airport staff to move quickly to designated bomb shelters as a precaution.
According to reports, the sirens triggered safety protocols at the airport, leading to a temporary suspension of some operations. A video recorded by a passenger showed travelers calmly walking towards underground shelters while many check-in counters appeared empty, indicating that airline staff had also been instructed to evacuate the area.
Flight tracking data showed several aircraft placed in holding patterns near the cities of Fujairah and Al-Ain while the security situation was assessed. Airport operations resumed approximately 30 minutes later after authorities confirmed the immediate threat had passed.
Sirens were also reported at Bahrain International Airport around the same time, highlighting the wider regional security alert.
The incident follows ongoing tensions in the region. On Monday, the Associated Press reported that Saudi Arabian and Kuwaiti defence forces had intercepted and destroyed eight drones, including two that were headed toward oil fields in Saudi Arabia’s eastern region. Iranian drones had also targeted the Ras Tanura oil refinery last week.
Earlier, on Saturday, flight operations at Dubai Airport were temporarily suspended after a drone crashed near one of the airport terminals during an aerial interception linked to the same conflict. Witnesses captured video footage showing a drone descending rapidly before crashing close to the airport complex, followed by a loud explosion and a plume of smoke rising into the sky.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a powerful blast as the drone was intercepted near the airport area. Smoke was seen spreading near a terminal entrance, causing airport activity to stop briefly.
Officials say that since the conflict began, the UAE has detected around 221 ballistic missiles and more than 1,300 drones linked to the attacks. In addition to the airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, some civilian locations including Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab have also reportedly been targeted.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while airport operations and regional air traffic remain under heightened security measures.
