Iranian Oil Tanker Changes Course to China from India

Iranian Oil Tanker Changes Course to China from India

Post by : Shakul

A tanker transporting Iranian crude has shifted its course from India to China, raising speculations on the renewal of oil trade between India and Iran. The vessel, named Ping Shun, was originally going to Vadinar Port in Gujarat, which would have marked India's first Iranian oil import in almost seven years.

Tracking data indicates that the US-sanctioned Aframax tanker, with approximately 600,000 barrels onboard, altered its destination to Dongying, China, just days before it was set to enter Indian waters. The tanker had been on course for India for about three days before changing direction near Gujarat.

Market analysts suggest that this sudden shift may be linked to issues surrounding payment. Sellers appear to be tightening their financial terms, preferring faster or upfront payments instead of flexible credit conditions, thus complicating transactions for buyers like Indian refineries.

The identities of both the buyer and seller in this shipment have not been disclosed. Furthermore, analysts highlighted that the destination signals on a vessel's tracking system can be altered at any time, meaning the cargo could potentially be redirected based on evolving commercial conditions.

India ceased importing Iranian crude back in 2019 due to increased US sanctions. Previously, Iran was a significant supplier, making up a large portion of India's oil imports thanks to its competitive pricing and compatibility with local refineries. This recent event underscores how geopolitical factors and financial uncertainties are impacting global oil trade.
