American Teen Jalue Dorje Embarks on Monastic Path

Post by : Shakul

Jalue Dorje might appear just like any typical American teenager, yet his journey diverges significantly from the experiences of most of his peers. Raised in the United States, Dorje was acknowledged by the Dalai Lama at a young age as the reincarnation of a revered Buddhist lama. Currently, at nineteen, he resides in India, undergoing training to become a leader in Tibetan Buddhism.

Originally from Columbia Heights, Minnesota, Dorje engaged in common teenage activities like football, gaming, and listening to music. He enjoyed late nights playing Madden NFL, passionately followed sports, and drove around with friends while indulging in contemporary music. Meanwhile, he dedicated time to studying Buddhist texts and Tibetan calligraphy, incorporating spiritual teachings into his daily life.

After graduating high school, everything changed for Dorje. He moved across the globe to join the Mindrolling Monastery in northern India, a prominent site for Tibetan Buddhist education and spiritual practice.

Recently, he visited Kathmandu, Nepal, to participate in sacred ceremonies at the renowned Shechen Monastery near the historic Boudhanath Stupa, one of Tibetan Buddhism’s holiest sites. During this trip, his parents came from the U.S. to witness his spiritual journey and offer their support.

Dressed in traditional maroon and golden monk robes, Dorje still maintains traces of his American upbringing. Beneath his robes, he sports whimsical white Crocs adorned with colorful charms. In his downtime, he enjoys sports, Marvel films, and gaming, all while adhering to the rigorous discipline of monastic life.

Identified as a significant spiritual figure at just four months old, Jain Dorje was later confirmed as the eighth Terchen Taksham Rinpoche—a lineage with deep historical roots. The Dalai Lama personally blessed him during a meeting in Wisconsin in 2010, advising his parents to allow him a childhood in America before joining monastery life.

Navigating two distinctly different worlds while growing up, Dorje memorized sacred texts in the morning before heading to school and football practice. At home, he balanced lessons in Buddhism and Tibetan culture with leisure activities like enjoying television, Pokémon, and modern music.

Known for his calm demeanor and positive spirit, Dorje earned a reputation for uplifting his teammates during football games and representing the Tibetan community at cultural functions in Minnesota. He also developed a keen interest in journalism and writing during his high school years.

Life in the monastery starkly contrasts his American lifestyle. He follows a structured routine rich in prayers, meditation, chanting, and Buddhist philosophy lessons. Daily chores involve hand-washing his clothes and eating simple meals of rice and lentils alongside monks from diverse Asian backgrounds.

Despite the hurdles, Dorje expresses a profound sense of readiness for the journey ahead. He aspires to return to the U.S. after years of study to teach Buddhism and uplift the Tibetan community in Minnesota. Inspired by leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and the Dalai Lama, he aims to become a beacon of peace and compassion.
