The three-day Narrative Forum in Kuwait concluded on Tuesday, organised by the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL). The event was part of the Arab Capital of Culture and Media 2025 initiative, aiming to celebrate literature, foster intellectual dialogue, and strengthen cultural ties across the Arab world.
Gathering of Writers and Intellectuals
The forum brought together prominent writers, critics, and intellectuals from across the Arab region. Participants explored a wide range of topics, including the role of imagination in fiction, the relationship between literature and history, and the ways in which storytelling shapes cultural identity. The event offered a platform for sharing ideas and promoting creative literary expression.
Focus on Science Fiction and Fantasy
A key session at the forum focused on science fiction and fantasy novels, examining both their regional and global presence. Speakers discussed how Arab authors contribute to these genres and how science fiction can address societal, technological, and cultural themes, making the literature both entertaining and meaningful.
Historical Narratives in Fiction
Another panel explored historical events in the dominance of fiction, analysing how writers reinterpret history through creative narrative techniques. Authors highlighted the power of storytelling to reimagine past events, bringing new perspectives and insights while connecting literature with historical scholarship.
Keynote Lecture on Narrative and Identity
The forum concluded with a keynote lecture by Moroccan academic Dr. Said Bengrad, Professor of Semiotics. He delivered a talk on narrative and identity, emphasizing how literature shapes individual and collective identities and the ways in which storytelling reflects cultural and social realities.
Promoting Arab Literature and Dialogue
The forum successfully promoted dialogue among Arab writers, critics, and scholars, encouraging collaboration and discussion of contemporary literary trends. It also highlighted the importance of supporting literary creativity and ensuring that diverse voices contribute to the Arab literary landscape.
Forum’s Cultural Significance
By connecting writers and thinkers across the Arab world, the Narrative Forum reinforced Kuwait’s role as a hub for literary and cultural exchange. It demonstrated how literature and storytelling continue to influence society, nurture imagination, and preserve cultural heritage for future generations.
