Kyrgyzstan Pursues $193M Investment in Water Sector

Post by : Shakul

Kyrgyzstan is actively seeking substantial international investments in its water sector, a step bolstered by discussions between high-ranking government officials and representatives from the World Bank and the International Development Association.

The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, Erlist Akunbekov, led discussions aimed at enhancing water management and expanding irrigation systems nationwide.

During the meeting, the proposed National Irrigation Investment Program was reviewed, which aims to secure approximately 193 million US dollars in funding for Kyrgyzstan. This initiative is designed to renovate irrigation systems, enhance water resource management, and bolster national food security.

Officials emphasized that this investment program will modernize outdated irrigation infrastructure, thereby supporting agricultural productivity throughout various regions. Addressing water management is a top government priority amid rising agricultural and environmental challenges.

The talks also covered the development of technical and design documentation for the Omuko Irrigation Canal in the At-Bashy District of Naryn Region, as well as the Chon Talas Canal in the Talas Region.

A grant fund of 650,000 US dollars was confirmed to aid in preparing the canal projects, with the funding anticipated to accelerate development and planning for forthcoming infrastructure enhancements.

To conclude the discussions, Erlist Akunbekov and World Bank representatives signed official protocols laying out the agreements and future steps for collaboration in the water sector.

Government officials stated that this partnership with international financial organizations reflects Kyrgyzstan's ongoing strategy to enhance water security, modernize agriculture, and attract sustainable foreign investments into critical infrastructure projects.
