Kyrgyzstan is advancing its initiatives to improve water management and irrigation systems following significant discussions with World Bank and International Development Association officials. These talks are centered on securing substantial investments for the nation’s water sector to bolster agriculture and infrastructure development as well as enhance food security.
Chaired by Erlist Akunbekov, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, the meeting tackled multiple essential projects aimed at upgrading irrigation infrastructure and optimizing water usage across the country.
A primary focus during the discussions was the anticipated National Irrigation Investment Program. Through this initiative, Kyrgyzstan is targeting approximately 193 million US dollars in financing. This investment will facilitate the modernization of irrigation networks, enhance water supply systems, and promote agricultural productivity throughout various regions.
Officials underscored that this irrigation investment program is integral to Kyrgyzstan’s long-term economic and agricultural growth strategy. The implementation of modern irrigation systems is crucial for boosting crop production, assisting rural communities, and reinforcing national food security in light of ongoing climate challenges.
Moreover, the session highlighted two key regional irrigation initiatives. Officials reviewed the preparations for the design documentation for the Omuko Irrigation Canal in the At-Bashy district and the Chon Talas Canal across the Bakai-Ata and Aitmatov districts.
According to plans, grant funding amounting to 650,000 US dollars will be utilized for preparing these technical documents. The expected outcomes of these projects involve enhancing irrigation capabilities in agricultural territories reliant on consistent water supplies for farming and economic development.
World Bank and International Development Association representatives conveyed their support for Kyrgyzstan’s modernization drive in water infrastructure. They explored methods to strengthen collaboration and ensure that upcoming investments are executed properly and sustainably.
Following the meeting, Erlist Akunbekov and World Bank officials finalized protocols highlighting the agreements and prospects for future cooperation established during the discussions. This signing reflects Kyrgyzstan’s ongoing efforts to draw international financial backing for essential infrastructure and agricultural growth projects.
The Kyrgyz government remains committed to enhancing irrigation systems and water management as they pursue improved food production, rural development, and long-term economic resilience.
