Sleep Deprivation Impedes Weight Loss, Cardiologist Warns

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Weight loss is often not as straightforward as simply eating less or exercising more. Many individuals pour effort into daily walks, gym sessions, and selecting healthy meals, yet fail to achieve their desired results. According to Dr. Sanjay Bhojraj, a cardiologist and functional medicine specialist with over two decades of experience, inadequate sleep might be a significant factor.

Dr. Bhojraj once believed that clean eating, cardio, weight lifting, and calorie counting were sufficient for shedding pounds. He practiced these methods personally and encouraged his patients to follow suit. Nevertheless, numerous patients saw little success; instead, they faced weight gain and fatigue, prompting him to investigate deeper into the body's responses.

He explained that weight management extends beyond diet and exercise; it also involves metabolic inflammation. This inflammation arises when the body endures prolonged stress, a primary contributor being poor sleep. When sleep is disrupted, the body produces elevated levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, while insulin levels rise. Consistently high levels of both create an environment conducive to fat retention, complicating weight loss.

Processed foods that seem 'healthy' and everyday emotional stress further exacerbate the issue. Consequently, the body remains fatigued, metabolic rates decline, and fat deposits persist. According to Dr. Bhojraj, merely consuming fewer calories won’t rectify this; the body necessitates adequate rest for recovery, effective digestion, and balanced fat burning.

Armed with this newfound understanding, he shifted his methodology. He encouraged patients to focus on enhancing their sleep patterns first. Recommendations included devising a relaxing bedtime routine, avoiding screens prior to sleep, and ensuring they get sufficient rest to wake up refreshed. Additionally, he advised gentle morning activities like stretching or walking to stimulate natural wakefulness.

Dr. Bhojraj observed that with improved sleep and reduced stress, his patients' cardiovascular health also saw enhancements. Over approximately 12 weeks, many achieved weight loss of up to 35 pounds, lowered blood pressure, and reported feeling rejuvenated and energetic.

The core message is clear: To lead a long, healthy life while maintaining a stable weight, prioritizing sleep is critical. Rest is not just a luxury; it plays a vital role in health, akin to nutritious eating and physical activity.
