Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te expressed on Wednesday the necessity of continuing arms purchases from the United States, deeming the defense partnership vital to ensure peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
During a press briefing commemorating two years of his presidency, Lai acknowledged the increasing military and political pressure exerted by China. He remarked that he would convey to US President Donald Trump the critical need for Taiwan's defense investments to safeguard regional peace if given the opportunity to speak directly.
Lai emphasized that Taiwan's destiny should not be dictated by external influences and asserted that democracy and freedom should not be misconstrued as provocative actions. He added that Taiwan views strength as essential to uphold peace and avert conflict in the area.
These comments followed Trump's recent suggestion that a new arms package for Taiwan could be leveraged during negotiations with China. Earlier this year, the US authorized a historic military package valued at billions meant for Taiwan.
China has reacted sharply to Lai’s assertions, with officials accusing him of advancing separatist sentiments and inflating tensions across the Taiwan Strait. Beijing continues to regard Taiwan as part of its territory and has consistently cautioned against foreign interference.
Lai affirmed Taiwan's readiness to partake in peaceful and respectful dialogue with China but firmly opposes attempts to enforce reunification through political pressure. He reiterated that the protective measures for Taiwan's democratic framework are paramount.
Beyond security issues, Lai shed light on Taiwan’s economic prowess, particularly in the realms of technology and semiconductor manufacturing. He introduced a new economic initiative worth billions aimed at modernizing traditional sectors and assisting small and medium-sized enterprises.
The president of Taiwan indicated that collaboration with the United States and other democratic nations would expand, focusing on security, trade, and advancements in technology. He conveyed that Taiwan aims to remain a stable and accountable partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
