Lizzo Reveals Her Struggles with Depression and the Path to Healing

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

American pop sensation and Grammy Award-winning artist Lizzo has candidly shared insights into one of the most challenging times in her life. In a heartfelt essay published on Substack, she detailed how depression, public scrutiny, and escalating pressure led her to a vulnerable state. Her narrative also chronicles her gradual journey toward healing, self-acceptance, and resilience.

Lizzo disclosed that her weight loss began in the autumn of 2023, sparked not by fitness aims but by a collapse of her mental well-being. She felt inundated by relentless public criticism and a scandal that left her feeling isolated. Her honest reflections reveal the loneliness and emotional battles many face yet often conceal.

Eventually, Lizzo sought professional support. Therapy sessions allowed her to recognize that her weight was both integral to her identity as well as a source of comfort and protection. She referred to it as a “shield” that helped her navigate tough periods. This understanding enabled her to adopt a kinder perspective towards herself and identify her emotional triggers more effectively.

The scandal she mentioned involved accusations from former dancers alleging sexual harassment and weight-shaming, which Lizzo denied. Nonetheless, the controversy severely impacted her mental health. Unlike in the past, when she would turn to binge-eating, she found herself less inclined to engage in that behavior this time, showing a transformative shift in her coping strategies. Rather than worrying about weight gain, she prioritized her health restoration. By January 2024, she reported a significant reduction of 16% in body fat and an impressive decline in her BMI by over 10 points.

Lizzo’s recovery journey was also reflected in her music. On June 27, she released her emotionally charged mixtape, My Face Hurts From Smiling, featuring 13 expressive tracks. Earlier in the year, she completed her fifth album, Love in Real Life, which includes hits like Still Bad and Love in Real Life. However, she decided in September to place this project on hold while she focuses on her mental wellness.

This essay serves as a powerful reminder that even successful individuals encounter significant challenges. Lizzo’s narrative encourages others to seek help in tough times, embrace body positivity, and practice self-compassion. It underscores that healing is a gradual process that starts with small steps, open conversations, and self-acceptance.
