Washington, US: A powerful winter storm has engulfed the eastern two-thirds of the United States, rendering nearly 1 million people powerless and resulting in over 10,000 flight cancellations. The storm features heavy snowfall, sleet, and perilously low temperatures.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings for sub-zero temperatures and risky conditions expected to linger for several days, creating "hazardous travel and damage to infrastructure." The states hit hardest include Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama.
According to PowerOutage.us, over 850,000 customers lack electricity, with Tennessee facing 290,000 outages, alongside significant numbers in Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana.
Meteorologist Allison Santorelli characterized the storm as "unprecedented" because of its extensive range, impacting nearly 213 million people across a sprawling 2,000-mile stretch from New Mexico and Texas to New England.
Labeling it as "historic," US President Donald Trump has authorized federal disaster declarations, with nearly 20 states and the District of Columbia proclaiming weather emergencies. Trump urged residents to "remain safe and warm."
This winter storm has led to significant travel chaos, with leading airlines cautioning passengers about potential cancellations and delays. FEMA has mobilized supplies and search-and-rescue teams in various affected states. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has advised citizens to prepare by stocking up on fuel and food while taking necessary precautions.
The NWS further warned that thick ice could lead to long-lasting power outages, severe damage to trees, and dangerously difficult travel conditions, even in areas unaccustomed to severe winter weather.
