In light of the ongoing global supply crisis, Malaysia is amplifying its initiatives to guarantee the country’s energy supply through the end of 2026. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim noted that the government is collaborating with energy agencies and industry leaders to ensure supply stability in the face of rising uncertainty in international markets.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, who also holds the Ministerial portfolio for Energy Transition and Water Transformation, mentioned that Malaysia’s energy reserves are projected to remain stable until July. However, efforts are being expedited to bolster national energy security through December by sourcing additional supplies from foreign markets.
Fadillah indicated that Petronas is proactively seeking alternative energy resources from several global regions, including Africa, to safeguard Malaysia from deepening international supply issues. Continuous measures are being implemented to avoid shortages that could affect industries, transport, and daily public requirements.
The current global crisis has already driven up logistics costs, fuel prices, and operating expenses across various sectors. According to Fadillah, industries such as healthcare and manufacturing are facing challenges due to shortages of vital raw materials and surging import expenses linked to the global energy scenario.
He cautioned that many Malaysians might not fully grasp the critical nature of the global crisis as the country has, until now, preserved relative stability. Behind the scenes, multiple agencies and energy firms are earnestly working to maintain supply chains and economic resilience.
The government encourages both the public and businesses to limit electricity and water usage as part of broader conservation strategies. Authorities argue that lowering overall energy consumption can help prolong supply availability while mitigating the country’s susceptibility to global market fluctuations.
Fadillah added that the National Economic Action Council conducts weekly meetings with industry stakeholders and government entities to assess the crisis’s impact on businesses, employment, and consumer pricing. Steps are also being prepared to protect small and medium enterprises while alleviating financial stress on the populace.
He affirmed Malaysia's commitment to balancing three key priorities in the energy sector: securing long-term supply, maintaining affordability for citizens, and fostering environmental sustainability goals amid ongoing global economic challenges.
