Malaysia's Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan has expressed that the newly installed government in Myanmar appears more receptive to engaging in dialogues and regional recommendations compared to its predecessor. His statements followed an official visit to Myanmar, where discussions centered on actions to restore peace and stability under ASEAN's peace framework.
Focus on ASEAN's Peace Initiative
In a meeting with Myanmar's Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe in Naypyitaw, Mohamad Hasan assessed the advancements of ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus. This peace framework was established following Myanmar's military takeover in 2021, yet its implementation has been limited over the years.
Human Rights and Refugee Concerns Addressed
Concerns regarding the release of political prisoners and humanitarian issues surrounding Rohingya refugees, many residing in Malaysia, were also brought up. The foreign minister highlighted the necessity of tackling these challenges in conjunction with wider peace initiatives.
ASEAN to Evaluate Strategy
Mohamad Hasan informed Parliament that ASEAN leaders have tasked foreign ministers with reviewing whether changes are necessary to enhance the Five-Point Consensus's effectiveness. Any suggested modifications would need the consent of all ASEAN member nations before enactment.
Myanmar's New Government Displays Willingness to Collaborate
Following elections earlier this year, Myanmar has established a new government with military-affiliated leaders back in power. Despite criticism from Western nations and opposition groups regarding the elections, Malaysia perceives the new administration as more open to working with ASEAN than previous ones.
Prioritizing Regional Peace
ASEAN remains committed to promoting peaceful dialogue, humanitarian assistance, and national reconciliation in Myanmar. The bloc aspires that renewed engagement with the current leadership will aid in curbing conflict and enhancing regional stability.
Future of ASEAN Diplomacy
While challenges persist, Malaysia's recent evaluation indicates that diplomatic interactions are becoming increasingly constructive. Regional leaders assert that ongoing dialogue and collaboration will be vital for securing lasting peace and rebuilding trust in Myanmar.
