Teenage Pair Arrested in Melaka Abortion Incident

Teenage Pair Arrested in Melaka Abortion Incident

Post by : Shakul

Authorities in Melaka have disclosed two alarming concealment of birth incidents this year, one involving a teenage couple accused of attempting an abortion through medication. The situation drew attention when a 17-year-old girl was hospitalized at Hospital Melaka due to severe bleeding related to her pregnancy. Medical staff, suspecting an illegal abortion had occurred, alerted the police.

Investigations reveal the couple, comprising an 18-year-old male and his girlfriend, had allegedly collaborated on the abortion plan. They reportedly tried to use pills for the procedure at home. The scenario escalated when the girl's health deteriorated, prompting her family to seek urgent medical care. Healthcare professionals initiated treatment and alerted law enforcement regarding the suspected offense.

According to Melaka police chief Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar, evidence showed that the male suspect had attempted to dispose of the foetus secretly after the failure of the abortion. It was reported that he planned to bury the foetus behind his house to eliminate any evidence. Investigators found that the foetus had initially been kept in a vehicle at the suspect’s home before police intervened.

The 18-year-old was arrested around 11:40 PM the same day the hospital report was made, with the teenage girl following suit after her discharge. Authorities are gathering medical evidence and statements as the investigation progresses. This case underscores growing alarm over unsafe abortions among teenagers and the urgent need for better reproductive health education.

Police confirmed that the male is likely to face charges under Section 318 of the Penal Code for secretly disposing of a body. The 17-year-old girl may be charged under Section 315 for allegedly causing the death of a newborn before birth. Both are expected to appear at the Ayer Keroh court for further proceedings on Friday.

Additionally, another disturbing incident in Melaka involved a young woman who allegedly gave birth alone in August last year. The situation devolved into a tragedy when the infant was reportedly handed over to her boyfriend and later died, subsequently being buried secretly by an abandoned house in Kelemak, Alor Gajah.

The skeletal remains suspect to belong to the baby were later found during police search efforts, shocking the local community and prompting deeper investigations. Five individuals connected to this case were detained but later released on police bail as investigations continued.

Combined, these cases have ignited significant public concern in Malaysia regarding issues related to teenage pregnancy and unsafe abortion attempts. Community leaders and social organizations are urging families and educational institutions to improve awareness and support for youth. Experts stress the importance of enhanced education and emotional support to prevent these tragedies from recurring.

Police have assured thorough and fair investigations into both cases. They reiterated that concealing births or improperly disposing of bodies is a grave offense under Malaysian law, with anticipated public interest in the upcoming court hearings as developments unfold in Melaka.
