India and Canada Revive Trade Negotiations, Target $50B by 2030

Post by : Bianca Haleem

India and Canada are making significant strides in enhancing their economic partnership, with leaders from both nations agreeing to restart negotiations on a high-ambition free trade deal. At the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met, signaling a noteworthy improvement in relations after recent diplomatic strains.

The proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aims to double bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030. This agreement would not only boost trade but also foster cooperation in critical sectors like technology, education, energy, defense, and space. Both countries are also looking to secure long-term uranium supply arrangements and enhance civil nuclear energy collaboration.

Moreover, the leaders endorsed the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership. This trilateral initiative will focus on pivotal technologies, artificial intelligence, nuclear energy, and diversifying supply chains. Carney also voiced his support for India hosting the AI Summit in February 2026, indicating shared enthusiasm for future innovations.

Bilateral relations had encountered difficulties in 2023 following the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised allegations regarding Indian government involvement, which India categorically denied. Since Carney took office in March, both nations have sought to repair ties by appointing new ambassadors and advancing discussions on trade, law enforcement, and security.

The G20 discussions further highlighted the value of high-level exchanges. Modi personally invited Carney to visit India, underscoring a commitment to ongoing collaboration and mutual confidence in the bilateral relationship. With CEPA back on the agenda, both nations are poised to accelerate their economic and technological alliances in the coming years.
