Hyderabad Cardiologist Identifies 5 Morning Habits Risking Heart Health

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

In Hyderabad, a senior cardiologist has raised concerns over several common morning rituals that may negatively affect heart health over time. Dr. Narasa Raju Kavalipati, director of Interventional Cardiology at CARE Hospitals, emphasizes that the habits we adopt right after waking up are crucial for cardiovascular well-being. Quick and hasty mornings can inadvertently place undue stress on the heart. Simple adjustments to these routines can yield long-term advantages.

Dr. Kavalipati's first cautionary note pertains to skipping breakfast, a prevalent trend among those who awaken late or rush out. He warns that prolonged fasting can lower blood sugar levels and elevate stress hormones, prompting the heart to exert more effort. This behavior, he claims, can lead to overeating, hormonal disruptions, and increased strain on the cardiovascular system. A modest breakfast, such as fruit with nuts, can positively kick-start one's day.

Next, he discusses the tendency to check one’s phone directly after waking up. Many individuals instinctively reach for their devices upon waking, but the cardiologist points out that instant screen engagement can raise stress hormones almost immediately. This cognitive overload can lead to spikes in blood pressure and heart rate. He recommends allowing the mind some time to calm through mild stretching or deep breathing for at least ten minutes before diving into notifications.

On the topic of morning beverages, Dr. Kavalipati notes the popularity of consuming coffee or tea right after waking. Although caffeine isn’t inherently harmful, he cautions that ingesting it on an empty stomach may lead to jitteriness, heart palpitations, and general discomfort, particularly in those with existing heart or blood pressure issues. To mitigate this, he advises pairing caffeine with food.

The cardiologist also highlights the common practice of immediately sitting up after the alarm goes off. Many people jump up without consideration, but he notes that muscles are often stiff from overnight rest, making a rapid transition stressful for the heart. He suggests a few minutes of gentle stretching or movements for a smoother shift from sleep to wakefulness.

Lastly, Dr. Kavalipati emphasizes the importance of not ignoring persistent morning fatigue. Regularly waking up drained, despite adequate rest, could signal underlying health problems. In these instances, the heart may be exerting extra effort to keep bodily functions in check, making timely medical evaluations essential. Although occasional tiredness is normal, ongoing exhaustion warrants attention.

The doctor reiterates that optimal heart health hinges on the small decisions made every day. A nutritious breakfast, delaying phone usage, avoiding caffeine on an empty stomach, gentle morning movements, and monitoring unusual fatigue can significantly lessen unnecessary heart strain. Adopting healthier habits each morning establishes a solid groundwork for enduring cardiovascular health.
