Moscow Urges Washington to Facilitate Attacks on Kyiv

Post by : Shweta

Russia is exerting pressure on the United States to assist in facilitating military operations aimed at Kyiv by requesting the evacuation of embassy staff and foreign personnel from the city. This escalation raises concerns about significant new developments in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Moscow allegedly planning to undertake “systematic strikes” on military-related targets within Kyiv.

Reports indicate that during a phone conversation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov communicated these intentions to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The Russian Foreign Ministry subsequently claimed that Lavrov had informed American officials of Moscow's determination to initiate renewed attacks on locations associated with Ukraine’s military leadership and command.

This warning follows one of the most severe waves of missile and drone assaults on Kyiv seen in recent times, where Russia deployed approximately 90 missiles along with hundreds of drones targeting the capital as well as surrounding areas, utilizing the formidable Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile. Ukrainian officials reported significant damage to residential properties, schools, markets, and cultural sites, resulting in civilian casualties and injuries.

Russian sources have claimed that these new offensives serve as retaliation for Ukrainian strikes within territories controlled by Russia, particularly in Luhansk. Moscow has accused Kyiv of attacking civilian infrastructures, leading to fatalities in Russian-held areas. In contrast, Ukraine firmly denies targeting civilians, asserting that its actions are focused exclusively on military objectives tied to Russia's aggressive strategies.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has decried Russia’s recent aerial assaults, warning that the deployment of Oreshnik missiles poses severe implications for global security. European leaders have also condemned Moscow’s operations, with various officials labeling them as “nuclear brinkmanship” due to the Oreshnik missile's nuclear delivery capabilities, though there were no reports of nuclear deployment during these attacks.

The recent events have intensified challenges for ongoing peace negotiations. The United States continues to engage in mediating talks between Russia and Ukraine, despite ongoing assaults and unsuccessful ceasefire efforts. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed that Washington remains committed to fostering diplomatic conversations, albeit acknowledging slow advancements.

Military experts suggest that Russia could be gearing up for a larger initiative aimed at degrading Ukraine’s military capabilities and obstructing any long-term resistance. Analysts note that Russian forces have increasingly targeted energy infrastructures, transportation networks, command centers, and strategic sites as part of a broader strategy during the conflict.

Kyiv is currently under heightened alarm as air raid warnings persist across multiple regions of Ukraine. Many residents have sought refuge once again in underground metro stations and emergency contingencies due to alerts of potential new assaults. Foreign governments are also reassessing travel advisories and security protocols for their diplomats in the region.

In spite of the rising threats, Ukrainian officials affirm their commitment to defending Kyiv against the escalating Russian military aggression. President Zelenskyy has consistently urged for stronger international military aid and advanced air defense mechanisms to shield civilians from imminent missile and drone attacks.
