Mounjaro Achieves Top Sales in India, Surpassing ₹100 Crore in October

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro has emerged as the leading medication in India, generating ₹100 crore ($11.38 million) in sales for the month of October. Launched in March 2025, Mounjaro rapidly gained traction among users. This surge indicates the increasing demand for effective solutions for obesity and diabetes management in India, where approximately 101 million individuals—around 11.4% of the population—are diagnosed with diabetes, as per a 2023 study published in The Lancet.

This injectable medication specifically targets individuals with type 2 diabetes who are struggling with overweight or obesity issues. Mounjaro functions by influencing two key hormones, GLP-1 and GIP, which assist in regulating appetite and blood sugar levels. Medical professionals note that it facilitates gradual, safe weight loss by decelerating digestion and curbing hunger.

Since its debut, Mounjaro has significantly outperformed its rival Wegovy, launched by Novo Nordisk in June, with its usage in October being ten times that of Wegovy. The drug's cumulative revenue has reached ₹333 crore since its introduction. Research also indicates that tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, may promote greater weight loss than semaglutide, known commercially as Ozempic.

While effective, experts emphasize that Mounjaro should be used with medical supervision, especially for those with diabetes or existing health conditions. The drug’s success demonstrates the urgent need for treatments that address both weight and blood sugar control in India. As cases of diabetes and obesity rise, medications like Mounjaro are becoming pivotal in healthcare strategies.

The increasing popularity of Mounjaro signifies heightened awareness among the populace regarding health issues and a willingness to seek treatments that enhance overall quality of life. However, healthcare practitioners stress that lifestyle modifications—including nutritious diets, consistent exercise, and a balanced diet—are critical components that should accompany any medication regimen.

Mounjaro’s swift rise in popularity highlights a modern trend in India toward effective treatments for obesity and diabetes, illustrating a public desire for safe and efficient methods to tackle health challenges affecting millions nationwide.
