The Ministry of Energy in Myanmar is expanding the distribution of compressed natural gas (CNG) by launching new outlets in key areas such as Yangon, Mandalay, Magway, and various townships. This initiative aims to facilitate efficient public transport and provide commuters with affordable fuel options.
At the same time, authorities are implementing stricter safety measures for vehicles powered by CNG, addressing concerns related to gas leaks, defective cylinders, and weak pipeline integrity. Officials emphasized that only those vehicles that pass mandatory annual inspections will be permitted to operate on CNG to mitigate risks of fire and accidents.
The government is also mandating thorough inspections of CNG cylinders, especially those over five years old. Cylinders older than 15 years will face even more rigorous evaluation, with many expected to be decommissioned to uphold safety protocols. Vehicle owners must adhere to these inspection requirements or risk loss of fuel supply.
Furthermore, stringent penalties will be imposed for non-compliance. Vehicles that miss inspection deadlines may incur temporary or permanent bans on CNG purchases. Authorities have urged all CNG vehicle owners to complete their inspections by April 30, 2026, ensuring continuous service and enhancing safety for all travelers.
