New DEMU Express Trains to Connect Yangon and Mandalay

Post by : Shakul

In a significant upgrade to its railway system, Myanmar is introducing modern air-conditioned DEMU passenger trains on vital routes, particularly the Yangon to Mandalay line. This new service is set to commence on May 1, 2026, following an announcement from the President.

As detailed by the Ministry of Transport, Myanmar Railways will manage these DEMU trains to ensure quicker and more comfortable journeys for travelers between major urban areas. This initiative is part of a larger strategy aimed at modernizing the public transport framework throughout the country.

The Yangon to Mandalay line will feature essential stops at Bago, Taungoo, Nay Pyi Taw, Yamethin, and Kyaukse, enhancing the connectivity and accessibility for passengers traveling through these key regions.

Pricing for the new train services has been established at 48,000 kyats for upper class and 34,000 kyats for first class, providing choices to suit various comfort and budget preferences.

Beyond the Yangon to Mandalay route, DEMU trains will also service the Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw corridor, covering multiple significant stations. This development is expected to bolster connections between the nation’s administrative and commerce hubs.

Passengers can conveniently buy tickets via the Online Railways Ticketing and Payment system, streamlining the reservation process.

Officials have indicated that, in response to growing passenger demand, the railway network will expand further, potentially including additional trains and routes to bolster travel capacities.

The launch of these modern DEMU trains is a testament to Myanmar’s dedication to enhancing its transport infrastructure, prioritizing safer, more efficient travel options for its citizens.
