NASA’s astronauts from the Artemis II mission have embarked on their return to Earth after an extraordinary crewed journey around the Moon, marking a significant milestone in deep space exploration after over half a century.
This esteemed crew, including Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, is aboard the Orion spacecraft, dubbed “Integrity,” now en route to an anticipated splashdown in the Pacific Ocean, close to Southern California.
As they approach Earth, Orion will detach from its service module before reentering the atmosphere. Communication with the crew will temporarily halt for around six minutes due to extreme heat and plasma generation.
During reentry, the spacecraft will encounter harsh conditions, racing back at speeds near 40,235 kilometers per hour. The exterior temperatures could soar to nearly 2,760 degrees Celsius, thoroughly testing Orion’s heat shield integrity.
NASA engineers have recalibrated the reentry trajectory after witnessing unexpected stress to the heat shield during a test flight in 2022. These improvements aim to mitigate heat accumulation, securing a smoother return for the astronauts.
Launched on April 1 from Cape Canaveral with the robust Space Launch System rocket, the mission has taken astronauts further into space than any crewed mission in recent decades, reaching an impressive distance of over 252,756 miles from Earth, eclipsing the Apollo 13 record from 1970.
If all goes to plan, the mission will end with a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific, representing a major accomplishment in NASA’s Artemis program and setting the stage for future manned missions to the Moon and beyond.
