In a significant move, the government of Nepal has enacted a two-day weekend for its public sector and educational establishments in response to ongoing fuel supply challenges. This policy, declared following a Cabinet meeting, designates Saturdays and Sundays as official holidays.
The initiative arises from worldwide oil supply difficulties linked to unrest in West Asia, which has led to fuel shortages and economic slowdown in various Asian nations. Officials have highlighted that this measure aims to mitigate fuel usage and effectively navigate the current crisis.
As clarified by government spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel, operational hours for governmental offices have been adjusted as well. The new schedule will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., a shift from the previous 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in order to sustain productivity despite fewer working days.
Moreover, the government intends to stimulate long-term solutions by advocating for a shift towards electric vehicles. Authorities are in the process of formulating legal structures to facilitate the conversion of petrol and diesel vehicles to electric ones, as Nepal aims to lessen its reliance on fossil fuels moving forward.
