New Compilation Explores Mental Health Through Women's Narratives

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A new compilation titled Bandaged Moments: Stories of Mental Health by Women Writers from Indian Languages has debuted, offering readers a more compassionate understanding of mental health. Edited by Nabanita Sengupta and Nishi Pulugurtha, and published by Niyogi Books, this anthology features 26 stories translated from 17 different Indian languages. It emphasizes that mental health transcends medical definitions, intricately tied to issues such as poverty, societal roles, and culture.

Typically, discussions surrounding mental health often simplify experiences into either clinical symptoms or motivational platitudes about positivity. In contrast, this anthology delves into the rawness of pain, silence, anxiety, and loneliness prevalent in everyday lives. Many stories wrap up without neat resolutions; some conclude in confusion, while others leave lingering questions, mirroring the complexities of real life.

The narratives included reveal various emotional struggles. For instance, in Ferns in the Moonlight, a character experiences feelings of invisibility due to fractured relationships. In Flying Fish, a man's isolation deepens following a heartbreak that spirals into schizophrenia. Convert My Bad Karma to Good portrays a woman who retreats into silence out of fear relating to marriage. Meanwhile, Story of Laughter depicts someone who opts for humor to mask their hidden pain while seeking help.

Several stories address familial and societal pressures contributing to mental health issues. In Sanjeevani, a young bride endures ongoing humiliation about dowry, leading her to contemplate suicide. Bleak Noon illustrates how poverty and forced marriage culminate in a public emotional breakdown, blending tears and laughter into one chaotic moment.

The anthology signifies that mental distress, especially in India, is deeply rooted in social structures like patriarchy, economic hardship, and the absence of emotional support. It doesn't merely serve as a medical issue that can be easily fixed; rather, it festers within families and relationships, often in silence. Frequently, characters lack someone genuinely empathetic to them, and this isolation itself becomes a source of suffering.

Notably, many stories maintain unresolved endings. In Tajmahal, the weight of humiliation leads to a tragic suicide. In Empty are the Houses of Seasons, a character considers ending her life, yet ultimately remains in a state of uncertainty, leaving the reader with her unresolved pain. Such storytelling lends the anthology an authenticity and earnestness, portraying healing as neither simple nor swift.

This work encourages readers to view mental health as a complex interplay between internal emotions and external contexts. Rather than mere slogans like “be strong” or “stay positive,” it advocates for listening, understanding, and recognizing the need for societal transformation.

While the compilation may not provide instant solace, it cultivates a space for empathy. By showcasing diverse voices from various languages and regions, it underscores that mental health challenges are universal and deserving of compassion and attention.
