Expert Opinion: Avoid Scented Soaps for Vaginal Hygiene

Expert Opinion: Avoid Scented Soaps for Vaginal Hygiene

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

A doctor from the NHS, Dr. Amir Khan, has provided valuable insights into vaginal health and hygiene. He emphasizes a common misconception: the vagina is inherently self-cleaning and does not require scented soaps or harsh products for maintenance.

According to Dr. Khan, utilizing scented soaps, wipes, or washes can upset the vagina's natural bacterial balance, which serves as a defense against infections. These products can eliminate beneficial bacteria and lead to issues such as irritation or infections. He recommends using only warm water for external cleansing.

Dr. Khan reassured that vaginal discharge is a normal, healthy phenomenon for most women. This discharge is a natural mechanism that keeps the vagina clean, and attention is only needed if there are noticeable changes in color, scent, or texture.

Regarding the natural scent of the vagina, he clarified that every individual has a unique aroma, and a typical scent is not indicative of poor hygiene. Should there be a sharp, unpleasant odor, it may signal an infection, warranting medical consultation.

Furthermore, he dispelled the myth that tampons can become lost within the body, stating that the cervix functions as a barrier, preventing such occurrences. While a tampon may shift slightly, a healthcare provider can easily remove it if necessary.

Dr. Khan’s take-home message is for women to trust their bodies. The vagina has maintained its natural balance for millennia, needing only basic care and attention to changes. No elaborate products or strong chemicals are required.

This guidance is particularly important as many women encounter pressure from advertising and social media to use additional products for a sense of cleanliness. Dr. Khan's advice serves as a reminder that natural care is often the healthiest option.
