NHS Surgeon Reveals 17% Reduction in Colon Cancer Risk with Calcium

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

Colon cancer has emerged as a significant global health concern. According to the World Health Organization, 2022 saw over 1.9 million diagnoses of colon or colorectal cancer, with projections estimating around 3.2 million cases annually by 2040, unless early detection and healthy choices become prioritized.

Most are aware of the benefits of a fibre-rich diet for digestive health, but NHS surgeon Dr. Karan Rajan has revealed another critical nutrient: calcium. Known primarily for its bone-strengthening properties, recent research suggests that calcium plays a vital role in colon cancer prevention.

Dr. Rajan stated that an intake of approximately 300 milligrams of calcium daily, sourced from food, could reduce colon cancer risk by 17%. This finding, from a study published in January 2025 in Nature Communications, observed over half a million women over 16 years, lending credibility to the results. The protective benefits of calcium were validated across various demographic factors including age, weight, and lifestyle.

Calcium's protective mechanism involves its ability to bind with bile acids produced during digestion, converting them into harmless forms. This action helps shield the colon's inner lining from damage and inflammation, ultimately lowering the likelihood of abnormal cell changes that can lead to cancer.

Dr. Rajan emphasized that achieving the necessary calcium intake doesn't require exotic or costly foods; a mere glass of milk provides close to this amount, as does plain yoghurt or a serving of cooked leafy greens. Even just two tablespoons of chia seeds can contribute nearly 200 milligrams, making it easy to integrate calcium-rich options into daily meals.

For those who avoid dairy, plant-based foods also offer a viable source of calcium. The study confirmed that calcium from both dairy and plant sources equally supports colon health, addressing dietary preferences for health or ethical reasons.

Interestingly, Dr. Rajan pointed out that whole food sources of calcium are more beneficial compared to supplements. While calcium supplements lower the risk of colon cancer by only 9%, dietary calcium achieves a more significant reduction of 17%. This difference may stem from the additional nutrients found in whole foods that work synergistically in the body.

Combining calcium-rich foods with fibre enhances their protective advantages further. As fibre aids in digestion and fosters a healthy gut, it, along with calcium, fortifies the colon from multiple angles to further decrease cancer risk.

Simple daily habits like including milk with breakfast, yoghurt with lunch, cooking greens for dinner, or adding chia seeds to snacks can lead to substantial health benefits over time.

Colon cancer typically develops silently and could lack early symptoms, making prevention critical. Regular screenings, especially after age 45, are recommended for early detection. Maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, weight management, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption are vital steps in risk reduction.

This guidance aims to empower individuals to make healthier choices but is not a substitute for professional medical advice. For personalized health concerns, consultation with a physician is essential.
